Maryland Audiologists, Hearing Aid
Dispensers and Speech-Language Pathologists Act Revision- HB 326 was
signed by Governor Martin O’Malley on May 8, 2007
HB 326
is now a law. The legislation revised the Board’s statute to conform to
current standards within the professions of audiology, hearing aid
dispensing and speech-language pathology
Effective
October 1, 2007 any newly hired personnel who provide
speech-language pathology services in the public schools must be
licensed as a speech-language pathologist or speech-language pathologist
assistant. The law does not apply to individuals hired prior to October
1, 2007. Students enrolled in graduate programs in speech-language
pathology are exempted from the license requirement if they are
obtaining clinical hours. §2-301.(a)(2)
Effective
September 30, 2007 an applicant for a full license as an
audiologist will be required to have a doctoral degree. An audiologist
who received a license based on a master’s degree prior to September 30,
2007, will qualify for a license to practice in Maryland. §
2-302.(c)(1)(i)
Effective
January 1, 2008, an applicant to become a hearing aid dispenser
will be required to have a two year degree from an accredited college or
university. Hearing Aid Dispensers will also be required to complete the
comprehensive coursework on hearing aid dispensing sponsored by the
International Hearing Aid Society prior to sitting for the licensing
examination. § 2-302.1(a)
