Procedures for Obtaining

Continuing Education Credit

1. Sponsors of a Program

When an association or organization (such as MSHA, a private practice, or a school system) conducts a continuing education program for its members or staff, the organization may apply for prior approval of the program. This means that the program is approved for all who attend and licensees do not need to request individual approval. An officer of the organization should complete a Form 2, "Application for Prior Approval of Continuing Education Program or Activities" and submit the original and one copy to the Board. Keep a copy for your files for reference. If you have not received approval within 3 weeks, contact the Board office.

2. Licensees

The Board strongly urges you to obtain prior approval for your continuing education activities and programs. This will allow the Board time to review your request and notify you of the results. Licensees may attend a program that they feel would be approved and find out later that the program is not approved or is approved for a lower number of CEU's than expected. Prior approval will eliminate any confusion on the acceptance of an activity or program.

Programs sponsored by ASHA, AAA, IHS, MSHA, MAA or MD-DC-DEL Hearing Society are automatically approved by the Board. Programs approved by these organizations for continuing education are approved by the Board in most instances. If in doubt, request prior approval of the program.

Although prior approval is strongly suggested, a licensee may submit a request for continuing education after the activity or program has taken place. This will not affect the approval or the number of CEU's for an activity or program.

A. Individual Participation

If you are planning to attend a program for which the sponsor has not requested prior approval, complete Form 4, "Application for Approval of CEU's for Individual Participation". If you are not sure whether the sponsor has requested prior approval, contact the Board office for this information.

Complete the Form 4 and submit an original and one copy to the Board. Keep a copy for your files for reference. If you have not received approval within 3 weeks, please call the Board office. If you request individual approval you are responsible for obtaining a certificate documenting your attendance at the program.

B. Individual Projects

It is possible to obtain continuing education units for individual projects. The Board strongly recommends that prior approval be obtained before undertaking the project. Complete Form 5, "Application for Approval of CEU's for Individual Projects" and submit an original and one copy to the Board. Keep a copy for your files for reference. If you have not received approval within 3 weeks, please call the Board office.
